Not yet have enough books? No problem, because I've got more for you. Today, here are two young adult novels that I really loved, one fantasy, the other one a love story. Check them out!
Title
Why We Broke Up
Author
Daniel Handler and Maira Kalman
Genre
Teen love
Subject
Feelings around break-ups
Similar to
This Lullaby by Sarah Dessen
Plot
When the story begins, Min and Ed have already broken up and Min has gathered everything that reminds her of their relationship. She puts it in a box that she’s going to leave on his door mat. On the way to his house, she goes through what she’s collected to tell us a story that could be so sweet if we didn’t know they would eventually break up.
Awesome
Min is the most loveable character you could imagine and even though the concept of popular boy falling in love with less popular but in truth really nice girl sounds boring, this is one of the sweetest love stories I have ever read. It totally made me want to hang with Min, so that she could forget him.
Critical
The relationship is super sweet and fun –the only tension is created by the fact that from the very beginning we already know that they will break up. I didn’t know for sure what I expected the reason to be, but the actual end was in my eyes too lame to finish such a sweet novel.
Title
Uglies
Author
Scott Westerfeld
Genre
Exciting teen science-fiction
Subject
Cosmetic surgery
Similar to
Starters by Lissa Price
Plot
Tally can’t wait for her sixteenth birthday, because on that very day she will – just like everyone where she lives – go through cosmetic surgery and become pretty. Once, she’s pretty, she will finally be able to join her older friends who already live beyond the boarding school and will have nothing but fun. Just a few days before though, she meets Shay who isn’t exactly looking forward to her sixteenth birthday.
Awesome
The subject is fascinating, because cosmetic surgery is such a big subject among teens today, so that the subject itself really is something for everyone. Also, there’s a cute little love story that’s not everything but creates some sweet moments.
Critical
Cosmetic surgery might be a more interesting subject for teens if the teens in the novel actually did it willingly and not because they were forced to. Sometimes, the characters also seem so brainwashed that there’s little tension but you rather feel like they will simply go on without noticing there’s still something wrong.
