It's with us twentyfour-seven: the internet - to research things for class, to chat with friends, to check the news. But isn't this imaginary world taking over? I came across the novel "Awaken" by Katie Kacwinzky randomly but as I read it, the conflict she describes really got me.
Awaken by Katie Kacwinzky
Maddie Freeman has a past of rebellion that she wants to forget as soon as possible in order to at just seventeen gain her parents' trust who are right now keeping her at home with only controlled access to the world beyond - but that's nothing new in Maddie's world: She's living in the future when the internet has become the only way to chat, meet friends and go to school, but despite her father being the director of the Digital School she discovers she can't be one of his supporters - and as she meets handsome Justin, she also discovers another side of her.
Many hints to Maddie's past on the first pages
makes them really exciting and the author has
quite an interesting idea for her vision of the
future. Many girls will be able to indentify with
Maddie as she feels like the boy she liked only
used her and the finish at the end creates
another climax. Girls who are into love stories
will enjoy it, but at the end loving him doesn't
automatically make her a rebel as well.
The way Maddie talks about her world seems like
it wasn't ordinary for her as well but as if she
knew the problem from our point of view. The
hints to her past at the beginning are much too
soon followed by an explanation and, although the
storie's told by Maddie, her words and her
thouhgts don't seem rebellious. As the
relationship between Maddie and Justin also gains
more and more importance for the story, it's sad
that there's no happy end for them.
Are the problems surrounding the internet the
setting for the love story of the other way
around? The theme is so interesting and definitely provides the reader with some stuff to think about! Also, the romance between them is a nice turning point which lets the suspense rise continously.
